EXT. MIKEY’S BAR - NIGHT
In a rural town in Indiana, a neon sign spelling Mikey’s Bar flickers.
INT. MIKEY'S BAR - NIGHT
The bar is moderately occupied as people chatter. DREW, White male in his mid 20’s, sits on his phone with a guitar strung over his back. He opens up messages sent almost a half an hour ago to his girlfriend.
DREW (over text)
Show’s starting in 45, where r u?
JULIA, White female in her mid 20’s, Drew’s girlfriend.
JULIA (over text)
Still at work, be there soon, love you xo
Texts show 30 minutes ago.
DREW (over text)
Coming? I really need you here
Drew has attempted to call Julia multiple times, no reply.
Drew gets up on stage and performs a slow melancholic song as he constantly scans the crowd for Julia.
20 minutes after the song Drew is staring into a bowl of bar nuts on the counter. Julia walks into the bar and walks up to Drew with a warm smile.
JULIA
Hey babe, are you gonna go on soon?
DREW
I already was up.
JULIA
Shit. Are you serious? I missed it. Work is such a pain in my ass. You know Brooke kept me late again. I sincerely don’t understand how she’s the same age as me--
Julia’s voice gets drowned out as Drew continues to stare at the nuts on the counter.
CUT TO:
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
Drew lays in bed alone on his phone. The clock shows almost 3 in the morning.
DREW (over text)
Coming home soon?
Another 30 minutes passes by and a text message pops up from Julia on Drew’s Phone.
JULIA (over text)
Be home soon! Love you xo
Again Drew has attempted to call Julia multiple times throughout the night but none have been answered. Drew eventually drifts to sleep before Julia arrives home.
CUT TO:
INT. KITCHEN - MORNING
Julia cracks eggs open over the stove and prepares breakfast as we hear Drew softly plucking at his guitar and humming.
JULIA
Babe! I made eggs, come eat if you’re hungry.
Drew walks into the kitchen wearing the same clothes he went to bed in. They eat in silence for a bit.
DREW
Did you have fun with your friends last night?
JULIA
Yeah it was good, we just went out for a few drinks then hung-out at Kristen’s place. Pretty usual.
DREW
That’s good.
JULIA
What’d you do while I was out?
DREW
Played video games. Sang. You know. I did write a new song.
JULIA
Maybe this one will be the chart topper.
Julia smiles.
INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
CUT TO:
Julia enters the house and the sound of Drew’s melancholy guitar is already heard. Julia opens the fridge and looks at an empty jug of milk.
JULIA
We’re almost out of groceries again Drew.
DREW
Yeah I saw that. If you give me some money I’ll go to the store while you’re at work tomorrow.
Julia paces over to Drew and behind him while she listens to him play for a bit.
JULIA
Drew.
DREW
Yeah?
JULIA
Have you thought about going back to community again? It’s the cheapest option and it would be good to get your associates under your belt.
DREW
Yeah. I was looking stuff up online today.
JULIA
Alright. Let me know what you think. Here’s 80. Just make sure to actually grab cheese this time.
Julia hands Drew the money.
INT. MIKEY’S BAR - NIGHT
CUT TO:
Drew is already up on stage playing a different but similar song to his previous. Julia is sitting by the bar. As Drew plays he glances at Julia often and sees her talking with a friend and another man at the bar not watching him.
Drew finishes the song. Sparse claps happen and we see Julia blow Drew a kiss.
CUT TO:
INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
Drew is sitting alone at the kitchen table with a nice dinner prepared. He is looking down at his phone and scrolling through messages.
DREW (over text)
I made the food. Will u be here soon?
JULIA (over text)
Told you friends invited me out for dinner, be back later xo
Drew walks into his bedroom and closes the door. Audio begins to intercut between Drew screaming and the sound of his guitar, switching back and forth between the two. Audio cuts out.
Julia walks in the door and sees the dinner still left out on the table and hears the sound of Drew’s guitar playing.
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
Julia opens the bedroom door to see Drew on the bed playing. His eyes are red from tears.
JULIA
Babe. Drew.
Julia grabs the strings on his guitar to stop his playing.
JULIA (CONT'D)
What is wrong?
DREW
Why? It’s not like you would fucking care anyway.
JULIA
I care more than anything in the world. What happened?
DREW
Where the fuck were you?
JULIA
What? I literally texted you and said I was out with my friends.
DREW
You know I made dinner for us.
JULIA
I didn’t ask you for that. I told you I was out.
DREW
After I had made the fucking food.
JULIA
I was at work. I can’t message you every second of the day.
DREW
You also can’t be bothered to pick up the phone a single time for me either right?
JULIA
Oh, so I’m at your beckon call then Drew?
DREW
It’d be nice if you gave a shit about me for once.
JULIA
I am here every single day listening to your fucking guitar. I do give a shit.
DREW
Here at 4 in the morning and then leaving at 8? That’s being here for me?
JULIA
Yeah well I work Drew. That’s more than you fucking do.
DREW
If you gave a shit you would be there.
JULIA
I’m here right now.
DREW
You would be at the fucking bar when I played and you would actually fucking watch me.
JULIA
Because I was late one time that means I don’t give a shit about you? Jesus christ.
DREW
You’ve been doing this for the past year.
JULIA
What? Working? Living my life? You know I’m sorry I don't sit around this house all day like you Drew, but I actually want to be happy and live my life.
DREW
You’re a piece of shit.
JULIA
I’m a piece of shit because I actually do stuff with my life? Well 95% of the population must be real pieces of shit then huh drew?
DREW
You’re a piece of shit because either you don’t even realize how you’re hurting me or you don’t care. And I’m pretty sure you’re smart enough to realize.
JULIA
Maybe you should get a job and a fucking career instead of playing your guitar all day.
DREW
That’s exactly what I mean. I should be the person you want me to be so that you’re satisfied with me right?
JULIA
You’re fucking insane.
DREW
Yeah, maybe.
Drew walks out the bedroom door.
INT. MIKEY’S BAR - NIGHT
CUT TO:
Drew is in the middle of a soft song. As he plays he notices a woman staring at him and listening to his performance intently. They meet eyes.
